Bringing Design Innovation to Healthcare Products

Bridging the Gap between Industry and Academia – Preparing and Industry ready workforce

Driven by its commitment to provide quality technical education, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) has come a long way and is geared towards a rapid growth. Established in 2002, UIET is a constituent institute of Punjab University, Chandigarh, India. The college places special emphasis on collaboration with industries at various levels to groom the students to meet the industry standards.

To produce professionally competent students, Ministry of Human Resource Development established the Design innovation Centre which provides a dedicated space and appropriate equipment to the students to develop their projects and bridge the gap between the academic curriculum and industry requirements.

In 2017, the Design Innovation Centre implemented the Stratasys Object 30 Prime Polyjet 3D Printing machine with the mission to develop state of the art medical device products.

“Learning through Experiments is the key to success for any product development. Thanks to Stratasys 3D Printing solution which helps us advance the Medical Research and Design Innovation”

Creating Medical Devices, Better and Faster

Enabling Creativity and Flexibility
The DIC Team at UIET, comprises of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science faculty and students with a key focus on developing indigenous (generic and patient specific) medical devices.

Learning through experiments” is the key that allows the student to develop a concept for creating something and having that fail and then redesigning it teaches the ins and outs and plays a crucial role in retaining concepts and ideas, said Dr. Prashant Jindal, Principal Investigator at Design Innovation Center, UIET.

One such example is the Human bite force measuring device which was developed based on the requirements given by the surgeon – Dr. Anand Gupta, Government Medical College & Hospital, Chandigarh. The device printed using Polyjet resin 3D Printer is used to assess biting force-related disorders and recovery rates of post operated patients who have undergone maxillofacial surgeries.

The device gets inserted into the mouth of the patient and is asked to give a strong bite. The purpose of the device is to get an estimate of how much is the biting force capacity of a patient and based on the number the surgeon can evaluate whether the bite force is normal or less and if it is less then what could be the issue with the jaw and tooth and the muscles in the face.

“So far we have done more 100 successful trials over normal patients who do not have any problem in their jaws”. – Dr. Prashant Jindal

Fast, Efficient workflow and Ease of use

3D Printer models made from VeroWhite 3D Printing material are strong and durable which enables students and faculty to easily test their designs for fit and function. Apart from VeroWhite, the materials used in 3D Printing machine, include Rigid, Rubber, Transparent, polypropylene and Bio-compatible, the possibilities are endless with Stratasys 3D Printiers. The ease of use machine interface and the 3D Printing software workflow helps students to understand it quickly.

High Accuracy – The Key to Successful Products

In 2018, Dr. Prashant Jindal & Dr. Mamta Juneja along with other team members had published a research paper on “Accuracy in dental surgical guide fabrication using different 3D Printing techniques”. Surgical guides had been 3D printed using different technologies like Material Jetting (Polyjet), Vat photopolymerization (SLA), and Material extrusion (FFF). The dimensions had then been compared with the dimensions obtained from software modeled images.

“Least error had been found for the guides fabricated using Material Jetting Technology (Polyjet)” – Dr. Mamta Juneja, Co-Investigator at Design Innovation Center, UIET
We are very happy with the continuous support from the Altem Technical Team, Timely trainings and machine maintenance helps us to run the machine smoothly and serves the community with a better solution – Dr. Prashant Jindal.
