Driving Efficiency and Precision: Stratasys 3D Printing’s Impact on Yazaki Corporation’s Operations

Mr Raju Nyamagoudar
R&D Head
Yazaki India

Yazaki Corporation, established in 1941, operates as an independent automotive component manufacturer. In addition to its significant market share in global automotive wire harnesses, the company specializes in the development and production of automotive-use products such as meters, electronic components, and various other offerings.

Wire harnesses are compactly bundled wires and data circuits that function as the central nervous system of a vehicle. To ensure safety and basic functions (going, turning and stopping), as well as provide comfort and convenience, automobiles are equipped with various electronics which operate using control signals running on electrical power supplied from the battery. The wire harness is the conduit for the transmission of these signals and electrical power.

The Objet 350 3D Printing machine plays a pivotal role in producing a diverse array of 3D printed parts both and components as well as assemblies which include over moulded plastic and rubber components for wiring harnesses. This unique possibility of Stratasys Polyjet technology based 3D Printing machine offers a multitude of advantages that significantly contribute to Yazaki’s operations and product development.

The key advantage of employing Stratasys 3D Printer lies in its capacity to craft functional prototypes mirroring real-world components. These prototypes play a pivotal role in fitment checks, enabling actual assembly assessments to ensure seamless component alignment. This not only heightens design precision but also expedites overall development by early identification and resolution of potential flaws. Additionally, this resin 3D printer aids in assessing the functional appearance of assembly parts, offering a tangible preview of component interaction and coexistence within the final product. This ensures meticulous consideration of aesthetics and ergonomics before manufacturing begins. Another notable advantage of a in-house Polyjet 3D printing lab at Yazaki empowers designers and test engineers by enabling them to work directly with functional prototypes. This hands-on capability facilitates comprehensive assembly tests, where wire harness components are fitted together. This approach enhances the understanding of component interaction and performance, resulting in improved designs and resilient final products.

“3D Printing has been a useful technology to plan new idea proposal and grab the valuable opportunities for future business”

Mr Raju Nyamagoudar,
R&D Head, Yazaki India

Collectively, these advantages underscore the transformative role of deploying Stratasys 3D Printer within Yazaki’s operations. This technology facilitates innovation, streamlines the development process, reduces costs associated with rapid prototyping, enhances design confidentiality, and accelerates time-to-market for their products. By harnessing the potential of 3D printing technology, Yazaki not only propels its own growth but also ensures the delivery of high-quality and meticulously tested components to its customers.

The prototyping requirement at Yazaki requires Stratasys Polyjet 3D Printing materials with various material properties for rigidness, flexibility and good strength. We use various raw materials to print the rapid prototype samples such as Rigur RGD450, Agilus30 Black/Clear, Digital ABS Plus RGD515 & RGD535 along with Support material SUP706. This material is utilized for printing of plastic & rubber parts belongs to wiring harness.

In comparsion to other resin 3D Printer Models wherein parts were more brittle and tend to break when undergoes fitment checks, with Polyjet 3D Printing from Stratasys and with 3D Printing materials such as Rigur and Digital ABS provides essential mechanical properties for snap-fit fitment check without compromising dimensional stability.

“Polyjet technology enabled us to fasten design process and custom approvals with excellent quality and reliability.”

Sr. Manager – R&D at Yazaki India
