The evolution of Additive Manufacturing / 3D printing in India has significantly impacted medical devices and equipment manufacturing, particularly in design validation and rapid prototyping. This progress has led to notable benefits, as exemplified by Subhag HealthTech Pvt Ltd’s pursuit to enhance accessibility, comfort, and credibility in infertility treatment.

Addressing the growing concern of infertility, Subhag HealthTech emerged as a collaboration between experienced medical professionals and entrepreneurs. Their focus on making assisted pregnancy methods more attainable prompted the development of a ‘Multipoint Catheter’ for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), a method aligned with local regulations.

The primary goal was to devise a medical device that underwent conceptualization, assembly, and testing using an appropriate, biocompatible 3D Printing materials , and cost-effective technology. Engaging in this endeavor, the team found their ally in Altem Technologies’ division of 3D Printing services in Bangalore, who collaborated across the entire process, from 3D Printing materials selection to prototyping, assembly, and testing. Initial steps involved selecting suitable 3D Printer resins for the complete device set, encompassing various attributes such as rigidity, transparency, and medical compatibility. The PolyJet 3D Printing technology emerged as the ideal tool for this endeavor, capable of evaluating diverse materials within a single build.

The journey to success encountered challenges along the way. Initial prototypes suffered from deformations that affected device functionality. Nevertheless, with collaborative effort and determination, a solution was quickly found. Refining design and material selections resulted in more promising second prototypes. Changes such as using biocompatible 3D Printing materials, sterilization, and precise assembly techniques led to the creation of an improved, functional product.

Additive Manufacturing Applications In Health Care

“When we started, we were not sure about who should we work with for this project. We are glad we met the experts at Altem Technologies who were able to address all our challenges from selecting the right 3D printing materials to prototyping and finally assembly and testing.”

Throughout this journey, Altem’s unwavering support and expertise played a crucial role. The team’s adeptness in suggesting materials and 3D printing techniques ensured optimal outcomes and a successful project completion.
This venture highlights a broader trend in the medical equipment industry. Increasingly, companies are turning to to both FDM ( Fused Deposition modelling ) and resin 3D Printers for enhanced efficiency, whether for rapid prototyping or even low-volume end-use part manufacturing. As Subhag HealthTech’s success demonstrates, the synergy between innovative technology and skilled expertise can lead to groundbreaking advancements that ultimately benefit patients and the medical field as a whole.

PS : Subhag Healthcare has also filed for a patent for this IUI device (Patent Application No: E-12/376/2018/MUM)
